A Day Out in Elche With The Kids

Hey there, it’s Rebecca! Today, I want to take you on a virtual journey through one of our amazing family adventures in Elche, Spain. Traveling with kids can be both exciting and challenging, but this day was an absolute blast! If you ever get the chance to visit Elche, I hope this helps to plan your day!

Morning in Elche: Discovering the City

Our day started with a hearty Spanish breakfast at a local café. The kids tried churros for the first time, and let me tell you, they loved it! Elche is a charming city, and wandering through its streets filled with palm trees was like stepping into a storybook.

We first explored Elche’s historic center, strolling through picturesque plazas and admiring the beautiful architecture. The kids were in awe of the Basilica of Santa Maria, and we even lit a candle inside to make a wish for our travels.

Palaeontological Museum: A Journey into Prehistoric Times

The highlight of our day was the visit to the Palaeontological Museum of Elche. This place is a hidden gem for families interested in history and paleontology. It’s conveniently located near the city center, just a short walk through a couple of back streets. We used google maps to help lead the way.

Inside the museum, we were greeted by a fascinating collection of fossils, skeletal remains, and interactive exhibits that brought prehistoric creatures to life. The kids were wide-eyed as they explored the world of dinosaurs, and I have to admit, it was pretty captivating for us adults too. I’ve never seen such amazing examples of fossils.

We visited on a weekday and we had the museum to ourselves, so we were able to enjoy the exhibits without feeling rushed. The staff were also incredibly knowledgeable and helpful, especially with the kids’ questions. There was an introductory video available in a range of languages, including English, and many of the boards included an English translation. We have been practicing our Spanish but the English definitely helped.

Lunch Break: Spanish Flavours

After our educational adventure at the museum, we were ready for lunch. Elche has an array of lovely restaurants to choose from, and we opted for one offering traditional Spanish dishes. The paella was a hit with the whole family, and we savored every bite while enjoying the warm Spanish sun on the restaurant’s terrace.

Afternoon Explorations

With our stomachs full, we decided to continue exploring Elche. The city is known for its stunning parks and gardens, so we took a leisurely stroll through the Elche Municipal Park. The kids had a great time running around, and I couldn’t resist snapping a few photos of them amidst the lush greenery.

Souvenir Shopping: A Little Piece of Elche

Before heading back to our caravan, we stopped by a local market to pick up some souvenirs. We found unique handcrafted items and gifts that would remind us of this fantastic day out.

Our visit to Elche was a day filled with learning, laughter, and quality family time. The Palaeontological Museum was a definite highlight, offering an enriching experience for our little explorers. If you ever find yourself in Elche with your kids, don’t miss the opportunity to step back in time at this captivating museum.
