Our worldschooling adventure led us to the charming Loire Valley, a region known for its lush landscapes, historic ch芒teaux, and pristine rivers. As nature enthusiasts, we couldn’t resist the call of the sparkling rivers and the opportunity to introduce our children (and ourselves!) to the joys of fishing.
Getting Started: Licensing and Essentials
Before embarking on our fishing adventure, we discovered that obtaining a fishing license in France is a straightforward process. We headed to the nearest Decathlon store, where the friendly staff sorted us out. The license is essential for both residents and tourists and allows you to fish legally in the country’s rivers and lakes. It’s a great educational opportunity to learn about regulations and environmental conservation.
Understanding Local Species: A Lesson in Biodiversity
Fishing also opened up a unique educational opportunity for our children. They learned about the diverse aquatic life in the Loire Valley, from common species like roach, bream, and perch to the elusive pike and zander. Observing and identifying these species in their natural habitat became a memorable biology lesson, and our kids were engaged in hands-on learning about ecosystems and the importance of protecting them. We used photos from Google to identify the fish we could see in the water.
Appreciating Conservation: Catch and Release
We emphasized the value of conservation during our fishing experience. We taught our children about catch and release practices, explaining how releasing the fish back into the water helps maintain the balance of aquatic ecosystems.
Patience and Problem-Solving: Life Skills Learned
Fishing also provided opportunities for developing life skills. Patience and problem-solving were paramount as we waited for the fish to bite and strategized on the best techniques and bait choices. These skills are not only valuable in fishing but also in various aspects of life. I’m going to be honest here, and tell you we caught nothing on our first attempt! We did not become disheartened; it taught us that sometimes things just take a little more practice and patience. We will definitely be having another go. Even without a catch, we learned so much from our experience and the children were fascinated at every moment.
Culinary Exploration: Preparing the Catch
If you’re a bit better (or luckier) than us, you might want to take things a step further and expand into yet another learning opportunity. Once you have a successful catch, you can venture into the culinary realm. Learn about cleaning, preparing, and cooking your catch (youtube will be a great resource here). This practical experience with food preparation and appreciation of local cuisine could be an enriching lesson in gastronomy.
Connecting with Locals: Cultural Immersion
Fishing in the Loire Valley provided an opportunity to connect with local anglers and learn about their traditions and techniques. A friendly man fishing by a bridge was more than happy to talk us through what he was doing. Engaging with locals is an integral part of worldschooling, as it exposes us to different cultures and perspectives.
