How to Keep Kids Engaged During Long Car Rides

Long car rides with children can be a challenging ordeal, but with the right strategies, they can also become memorable and enjoyable adventures. I never thought I’d say that! We used to dread 1 hour in the car, but now we can do 6-8 hours without complaint.

In this article, we’ll explore practical tips and creative ideas to keep your kids engaged and entertained during those lengthy journeys.

Plan Ahead With Road Trip Games

Before hitting the road, plan a list of fun road trip games like “I Spy,” the license plate game, or scavenger hunts. These games are not only entertaining but also help pass the time. I’ve written a post suggesting way more car games here.

Create a Kid-Friendly Playlist

Compile a playlist of your children’s favorite songs. Sing-alongs and dance sessions in the car can make the trip more enjoyable. If you are able to stream music, you can even take requests! Our kids always ask for ‘Paint it Black’ on repeat!

Audio Books and Podcasts

Consider age-appropriate audio books or podcasts that the whole family can enjoy. This is a great way to combine entertainment and education. It’s worth looking into a Spotify subscription as there are loads available and you can download them to listen offline.

Snack Time Fun

Pack a variety of snacks that are easy to eat in the car. Snack time can be an exciting break during the journey. Let your kids help choose their snacks, perhaps choose some that you don’t usually buy. You can include some healthy options too, Fruit is always a winner in our car.

Arts and Crafts on the Go

Provide your children with a travel-friendly arts and crafts kit. They can draw, color, or do simple crafts, which can keep them occupied and stimulate their creativity. We also have some little cards with activities and whiteboard markers to complete them, it works great as each child can have a turn at the activity and even repeat them after a while.

Technology Time

While it’s important to limit screen time, a tablet or handheld game console can be a valuable tool for keeping kids engaged during long car rides. Load it up with educational games and apps. To be honest, we are a little more relaxed on longer travel days and give them more freedom than usual with the screens. We have iPads and a Nintendo Switch with games like Minecraft (which can be educational too!).

Frequent Pit Stops

Plan regular pit stops for stretching, bathroom breaks, and a bit of playtime. Sometimes we will use Google Maps to search for playgrounds close to our route, rather than relying on service stations which don’t often have much for the kids. There are also days when the kids are doing very well in the car and stops are minimal. It’s a balance you have to get right for your family.

Interactive Maps

Give your kids a map or GPS device and involve them in tracking your journey. They can follow along and help navigate. It will also stop the repetitive ‘are we there yet?’ , as they can see for themselves!

Surprise Treats

On particularly long journeys, I like to keep a few surprise treats hidden away. These can be rewards for good behavior or simply a delightful surprise to break up the monotony of the road.

Make the Journey Part of the Adventure

Encourage your children to observe the scenery and wildlife you encounter during the journey. Talk about what you see and turn the drive into a learning experience. The more you engage with them, the more they will get out of the journey.

Long car rides with kids don’t have to be a dreaded part of your travels. With a little preparation and a touch of creativity, you can turn these journeys into memorable bonding experiences. Keep in mind that flexibility and a sense of adventure go a long way in making the road trip enjoyable for both you and your children. Safe travels!
