How To Spend 1 Day In Madrid With Kids

Hey everyone! If you’re planning a day out in Madrid with kids, here’s how we did it and had a blast. Madrid’s not just for grown-ups; there’s loads to do with the little ones, too.

Morning: Chill Time at Retiro Park

We started our day at Retiro Park. It’s a huge, beautiful park right in the middle of the city. The kids loved running around and, guess what? They even saw turtles swimming in the ponds! They were amazed, and it was totally free. Definitely a must-do for a relaxed family morning.

Noon: Dreamy Palacio de Cristal

Then, we headed to the Palacio de Cristal. It’s like a giant glass castle in the middle of the park. The kids thought it was straight out of a storybook, and honestly, so did I. It’s super pretty and a great place to cool down and snap some magical family pics. There are plenty of opportunities to sit an enjoy a picnic.

Afternoon: Royal Palace Gardens

After that, we checked out the Royal Palace. It’s so beautiful and grand, but our favourite part was the gardens they overlook – what a view!

Late Afternoon: Surprise at Temple of Debod

The Temple of Debod was next. It’s this ancient Egyptian temple right in the middle of Madrid. Totally unexpected! We all learned something new and the kids were amazed. It’s a bit of a hidden gem and a cool spot for a different kind of history lesson. You have to climb up some steps (at least from the direction we came), so we carried the pushchair. Aside from this part, I’d say Madrid was very pram friendly and accessible.

Evening: Dinner and Ice Cream at Plaza Mayor

We ended our day at Plaza Mayor. Okay, heads up, it’s pretty but also very touristy. We had dinner there but it was a bit pricey. Next time, we’ll go where the locals eat for a better deal. But, the kids did enjoy the atmosphere and we bought some amazing ice cream there for the walk back to the car, so it wasn’t all bad.

Also, a tip if you’re driving – parking cost us about €30 for the day. It was the most convenient and cost-effective option for us because we were staying around 1 hour away.

So, that’s how we did our day in Madrid with kids. Loads of fun, loads of learning, and loads of memories! Hope this helps you plan your family day out in Madrid! If you’re a frequent traveller, you can read our other suggested itineraries here!
