Embarking on a family adventure in your RV or caravan is an incredible experience, but feeding the whole crew while on the road can be a challenge. We’re living in our caravan long term as we worldschool the kids, so we’ve got it sussed now! With a bit of planning, you can turn your mealtimes into stress-free and enjoyable moments. Here are some tips to help you plan your RV meals with ease.
Create a Meal Schedule
Having a meal schedule helps maintain routine and structure for your kids. Plan breakfast, lunch, and dinner times, and stick to them as much as possible.
Stock Up Smart
Before hitting the road, make a comprehensive shopping list. Focus on non-perishable items like canned goods, pasta, rice, and snacks. This way, you’ll always have some essentials on hand. If you’re travelling abroad, consider your personal food staples that may not be available in the country you’re visiting.
Easy and Versatile Recipes
Opt for recipes that are easy to prepare and adaptable. One-pot meals and foil packet dinners are great choices. They reduce the need for extensive cooking equipment and cleanup. If you have a BBQ there are endless combinations of meat and veg, I know we never get bored! Think about what sauces and condiments can vary things up.
Healthy Snacks
My kids are always hungry so we make sure to keep a supply of healthy snacks like breakfast bars, nuts, and cut-up veggies. The boys also love their fruit and yogurts. These snacks can come in handy during long drives, or days out, and keep everyone satisfied between meals. There’s not much worse than a hangry child!
Meal Prep Ahead
If you have access to a kitchen or grill at your campsite, do some meal prep in advance. Marinate meat, chop veggies, and store them in airtight containers. This makes cooking in your RV much quicker. We also use a vacuum food sealer to help food last longer.
Kitchen Essentials
Ensure your RV kitchen is well-equipped. You won’t have room for too much so choosing the most useful equipment is key. Invest in good-quality pots, pans, and utensils. Don’t forget essentials like a can opener, cutting board, and a set of spices.
Local Flavours
Take advantage of your travels to try local cuisine. Visit local markets and restaurants to savor the flavors of the region you’re exploring.
Family Cooking Fun
Involve the kids in meal preparation. It can be an educational and entertaining activity for them, and it eases the workload for you.
With a well-thought-out meal plan, you’ll enjoy delicious, stress-free meals on the road. Don’t forget to take advantage of the beautiful outdoor settings for your family picnics. Happy and wholesome eating on your RV adventures! 🚐🍽️
